Why do we need to follow up after the bariatric surgery?
Bariatric surgery can be the ideal solution for healing overweight and weight-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and atherosclerosis.
But the journey of losing weight doesn’t end in the operating room; this is just the beginning.
And in order for your health journey to be completed, you must have a road companion who will guide you to the right path on your journey and be with you step by step until you reach your goal safely and without any complications… Your companion on this journey is your medical team, and you should follow up with them at every stage of the weight loss process.
How do you follow up after the surgery?
1- When the patient comes out of the surgery room and then stays in another one, the surgeon’s assistant passes by to check on his vital signs, and accordingly gives some drinking instructions.
2- The patient stays for two nights and returns home by the third day.
3- Someone from the nutrition team communicates with him daily to see the amount of fluids he drinks and to reassure his movement and temperature. Every day he follows a regime that he must adhere to. This regime consists of transparent liquids that gradually turn into thicker liquids such as juices and soups, then move to semi-soft food and finally move to semi-solid food.
4- The patient also follows some medical advice, such as regularly measuring the body temperature, some breathing exercises, and starting to include food in his eating regimen.
5- On the tenth day, a team member will send the patient on WhatsApp, the lunch regime for the second, third, and fourth weeks.
6- In the third week, the patient will be contacted to schedule a follow-up appointment with Dr. Mohamed Hany Ashour to check on his general health and wounds and take vitamins that are sufficient for 3 months, which is the first period after surgery, and they must start this course in the second month of surgery
What is the importance of nutritional follow-up?
Nutritional follow-up has a role in maintaining the new weight. At the same time, it protects against any complications, and accordingly, the most important way to maintain a healthy weight is to change your eating habits and lifestyle to new healthy ones before having the surgery.
What is the importance of psychological follow-up?
The goal of psychological support at the time of the patient’s losing weight is to change the habits that lead to weight gain into other new habits. In addition to having a healthy, permanent, and stable lifestyle, it also helps the patient with healing the disorders caused by weight loss and reduces food intake.
The role of the psychologist after bariatric surgery:
- It will help the patient to discover the psychological causes behind “emotional eating” and the association of those feelings with eating.
- Discover the reasons that let the patient neglect his health and appearance (your inner view of yourself).
- Discover and correct the misconceptions about obesity.
- Discover new hobbies and interests instead of eating.
- It will help the patient become more aware of his feelings.
- It will help the patient understand and love his body more and realize its needs.
